DD Spawn Hits the Shelves

If you were feeling bad because the Mt. Edition Low was only available in Japan, now’s your chance to snag something that’s pretty similar to this classic skateboarding shoe. Australian pro skateboarder Dustin Dollin has lent his name to the Vans brand for the eighth time, creating the DD Spawn using the Mt. Edition Low as a starting point.

Dustin, who has been featured in Tony Hawk video games, designed the shoe with some improvements to the upper to make it more suitable for skateboarding and added high performance features like a full length PU footbed. The result is more durable and more cushioned skateboarding shoe, tried and tested by Dustin – aka “Spawn” – himself.

The most standout feature on the DD Spawn skateboarding shoe is the fat forefront Velcro strap, which is also seen on the Mt. Edition Low. Other features of the DD Spawn skateboarding shoe: it has custom pro graphics, a low profile silhouette, premium suede and leather uppers, and of course, signature vulcanized waffle sole.

The DD Spawn is available all over Canada and the US in red/black and black/blue colour combinations. Check out some photos of the skate shoes here.

Rowley Stripes Skate Shoes

Vans is going waaaay back with a fresh twist for their release of the Rowley Stripes, an updated court shoe designed by pro skateboarder Geoff Rowley. The Rowley Stripes is his twelfth signature shoe for Vans, and each style he’s done in the past has been a huge hit – obviously, skate shoes designed and developed by a pro skateboarder are going to be good! Rowley has painstakingly tested and perfected the Vans Stripes, which are built on a next  generation BoardFeel XD outsole and EVA footbed (EVA stands for Ethylene Vinyl Acetate, and is a dense, eco-conscious foam that acts as a shock absorber).

Pro skater Geoff Rowley thought about his early days of skating while he was creating the newest Vans shoe, bringing in what he liked to wear when he first started skateboarding in England at the age of 13.  For this season’s design, he drew a lot of inspiration from his earlier, popular Squares skate shoe, but added some updates to make the look more fashionable.

Rowley has made sure that the new Vans Stripes ideally balance durability, grip and comfort, with a sturdy design that is cushioned yet lightweight. You can find the Vans Rowley in four rich colourways: eggplant with cement accents, black with white, cement with pebble, and black on black. And, attention animal lovers: Tthese new Vans men’s shoes are vegan and animal-friendly, made of synthetic leather and canvas – although you can get the Rowley with reinforced suede uppers.

Want to see the Rowley Stripes? Here they are!

Vans Vault Shoes for Summer 2010

We’re right in the midst of summer, and the trend we’re seeing a lot of on the streets of Vancouver this season is casual, canvas slip-ons paired with everything from flowing dresses to skinny jeans. On many feet are the durable yet lightweight Vans Vault sneakers, similar to the old-school Keds. (If you were born in the late 70’s/early 80’s, you probably remember the Keds craze of the early 90’s, where every guy and girl seemed to be sporting those classic three-hole sneakers in white or navy).

Well, like every other trend – from bell bottoms to neon sunglasses, the canvas boat shoe has made a comeback. Vans sneakers released their new models from the Vans Vault shoe Collection in January 2010, but we haven’t been seeing a lot of them until now, as it heats up and more people hit the beach or congregate on the streets downtown.

Two of the most popular Vans Vault shoes for spring/summer 2010 come in either a bold, rich purple or a soft mahogany brown, both with a sturdy leather upper and the traditional Vans tag and waffle-design soles to prevent slipping.

It also looks like the Vans Vault shoe ollection will bring another fresh footwear perspective to stores in the fall of 2010. Word is that the new autumn Vans Vault shoe line will features the same casual style with leather uppers and a native inspiration.

However, let’s not think about the arrival of fall or winter just yet…let’s just enjoy the sun, sand, and everything else summertime has to offer!

Weird Al’s Shoe Fetish: Vans Slip-Ons

Weird Al has been poking fun at everything he can think of for years with parodies like “Like a Surgeon,” “White and Nerdy” and “Amish Paradise.” He’s played sold-out tours all over the world, and just keeps coming out with more albums of cleverly-worded satirical songs.

He even made fun of Canada in his Straight Outta Lynwood album, with the song “Canadian Idiot,” a parody of Green Day’s song “American Idiot.” The song makes fun of Canadians for living on donuts and moose meat, and he sings:

“Tell me, what kinda freaks are that polite? / It’s gotta mean they’re all up to something / So quick, before they see it coming / Time for a pre-emptive strike.”

But, there’s one thing that Weird Al takes very seriously – Vans Shoes. Yankovic says he’s been collecting Vans shoes since the early 80’s, and owns about 100 pairs, mostly Vans slip-ons. His collection of crazy shoes, which include Vans slip-ons with palm trees, Hawaiian patterns and of course, the classic checkerboard squares, are often seen onstage when he performs. How many pairs of Vans slip-ons do you think he takes with him when he goes on tour?

Check out a photo of Weird Al with his impressive Vans shoe collection!

A New Vans Boot: The Hearty Buffalo Boot LX

Let’s take a break from the soft, feminine styles of summer and look at men’s shoes that are rugged and outdoorsy, perfect for a weekend of camping, hiking trip, or just strolling around the city. Vans has been bringing the best of both worlds to the shelves of Canadian shoe stores for years: they keep their classic skate shoes but also introduce new, unique styles each season for those who want something different.

Like we mentioned in an earlier post, boots are going to be big this summer season! Vans is the latest shoe company to release a boot – the Buffalo Boot LX. The Buffalo Boot LX is a rugged men’s boot, which was inspired by a number of different Vans styles like the Mountain Edition and the Half Cab.

The Vans Buffalo Boot looks like a hiking boot, made of a solid leather and suede combination, with the suede covering most of the lower half of the shoes, going all the way around the heel. The leather blends into the ankle and into the midpanel, bearing the Vans logo on the ankle. The final touch: the laces, a red and black combo shoelace that sits on a leather tongue and white outsole, with gold metal eyelets.

The men’s Buffalo Boot LX is from the Vans Vault line.

Vans Shoes Bring Plaid Back

As summer gets closer, we begin to see plaid popping up in everything from bathing suits to Bermuda shorts. Vans has gotten on board with plaid, which is even more popular this year, and has released their version of tartan with the Vans Era “Plaid Pack.”

Choose between three different designs, featuring bright plaid patterns on the toe box and heel, sturdy canvas uppers, and white vulcanized rubber sole. The colour schemes to choose from are traditional-looking red plaid with blue uppers, yellow plaid with purple uppers, or pink plaid with yellow uppers. While Vans calls the Plaid Pack shoes unisex, the pink one looks decidedly feminine. The Sk8 Hi is the high-top version, available in the same colour palettes as the low-cut Vans shoes versions.

With their vibrant colour schemes and bold plaid motifs, these Vans shoes are a refreshing addition to the company’s straightforward, classic shoes that have also stayed pretty similar throughout the years (like the famous Checkerboard Vans or Classic Slip-ons).

Vans shoes have previously sported plaid, but we haven’t seen it for awhile. In the past few years, we’ve seen the solid, more subdued colours come out in the spring/summer, so it’s nice to see them introducing something fresh for 2010.
